First Person

share your stories from home
A while back, we invited listeners to send us a short story or a poem about their homes for a feature called "Stories from Home."

We're resurrecting this feature, but we're calling it "First Person" a place for you to give us your stories, poems, or short fiction. So far it's been a resounding success with entries from all over the country—and beyond.

Ode to a Friend
by Jenny L. Gordon

(11/20/08)

I have inhabited block 45, of the James McGregor Jr. addition, since the day I was built in 1886. In the century plus, of which I've lived, I've housed many different owners. My colors have changed from a mustard yellow, to kaki green, then to plain white, and now to it's current light gray with emerald green shutters.

Shoo Fly
by Linda Collins

(11/20/08)

No matter how hard I try
I just cannot seem
to appreciate the fly.
It finds its way in
easily enough, depositing
who-knows-what
on all of my stuff.
You'd think it could leave
with similar ease,
but instead it just weaves
to and fro, bumping
incessantly against the window.
Try as I might to deliver
death's smite,
at the last possible moment
it always takes flight.
Yes, the fly keeps in motion
buzzed on some magic elixir,
'til finally it dies
inside my light fixture.
Though I do understand
that it's one of God's creatures,
the fly does not have
any redeeming features.

    LIBERTY

Liberty:A Novel of Lake Wobegon A national holiday in Lake Wobegon is always gaudy and joyful. But what is going on between Clint Bunsen and Miss Liberty?
Everyone is here—Pastor Ingqvist, the Sons of Knute, Sister Arvonne of Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility and her ocarina band, the Norwegian bachelor farmers, Dorothy and the Chatterbox Café, Wally in the Sidetrack Tap—as crowds converge on the little town to celebrate American independence, even as the chairman of the event broods on the great question of the day: Shall we struggle on valiantly here or shall we burst the bonds and find beautiful life in the golden west?

    YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT?

English Majors CD Set Scripts and bits from A Prairie Home Companion celebrate the secret society of men and women who possess excellent spelling and punctuation skills. (You know who you are.) Selections include "The Six-Minute Hamlet," a tribute to Emily Dickinson, a Guy Noir adventure that exposes an MFA scam, a riveting "Professional Organization of English Majors" drama, and guests Billy Collins, Robert Bly, Roy Blount Jr., and Calvin Trillin.
